|President Akufo-Addo’s in his 12th National address on Covid-19 fight has announced that his government will defray the entire fee for the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) for all final year candidates of Senior High Schools
The cost of this sponsorship amounts to GHc75.4m and will cover over 313,813 students, President Nana Akufo-Addo said in his latest address to the nation Sunday.
The reopening of schools for selected students will see about 800,000 teachers, non-teachers and students in the over 1,000 SHSs across the country.
He said the introduction of the Free SHS has seen about 1.2million students enrolled in various SHSs across the country, which makes it the highest population the country has recorded in its history.
“The policy has also ensured that 400,000 more students have entered school which they wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity without the policy,” he added.
A milestone in Ghanaian education
The move to shoulder the entire cost of the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examinations WASSCE is a milestone in Ghanian education.
He said the government’s decision to invest the country’s resources into education is due to the fact that it is the youth of today who are going to develop Ghana, saying “without education, we can’t transform from a developing country to a developed country.”
All 1167 senior high schools in the country have been fumigated and disinfected. Each student teaching and non teaching staff invigilator and school administrator numbering some 800,000 will be provided with 3 pieces of reusable facemask.
The president also announced the measures the Government had put in place to reduce the risk of an outbreak in schools to the bearest minimum.
The president enforced adherence to all hygiene protocols implemented by health parastatals.
