FDA pounces on quack peddlers of coronavirus cure, while cautioning the public

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in collaboration with the Police Drug Enforcement unit of the Police CID have seized a total of 431 bottles of unregistered herbal drugs professed to cure the novel coronavirus.

The drugs namely, COVID-CURE (1) and COVID-CURE (2) is said to violate Section 118 (1) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

In a statement, signed by the Chief Executive Director of the Authority, Delese Mimi Darko, said, the herbal products falsely labelled to bear forced FDA registration number: FDB/TMP03709 on both products and also have March 2020 and March 2021 as their manufacturing and expiry dates respectively.

Similarly, the Authority on visiting the premises discovered the poor hygienic conditions under which the supposed cure concoctions were being prepared.

This necessitated the FDA to issue a caveat to the public, warning that it has not registered any product for the treatment or cure for COVID-19, further imploring Ghanaians to refrain from such sham of a cure.

Per the presser sighted by The Vaultz News, the production of drug breaches section 113 (1) of the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851) which states,

“a person shall not manufacture a drug, herbal medicine product, cosmetic, medical device or household chemical substance for sale unless the conditions under which the manufacture is to be carried out for use is specified in the guidelines of the Authority to ensure that the article will be of good quality”.

The FDA has however cautioned manufacturers, producers and distributers to ensure their products have been duly certified and approved by the Authority.

Meanwhile, the perpetrators of the crime, Dr. Abdellah and his research assistant, Dr. Abdul Samad Bin Musa have since been in police custody for violating Sections 118(1) and 113(1) of the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851).

An exposé by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tigereye PI team brought to bear the clandestine dealings of these individuals via the release of their latest investigative piece which aired on Monday, June 29, 2020, dubbed “Corona Quack”.
