7 Mining Companies to make a Court Appearance for Illegal Mining.

A plaintiff, in the person of David Addo, has hauled seven mining companies, the Attorney General and the Minerals Commission of Ghana to Court over alleged mining illegalities. Mr Addo claims AngloGold Gold Ashanti Iduapriem Ltd, Newmont Ghana Ltd, AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Ltd, Newmont Ghana Gold Ltd, Golden Start (Bogoso) Ltd, Asanko Gold GH Ltd and Ghana bauxite Ltd are all engaged in mining illegally in Ghana and further pleaded, in his suit,  that the High Court back his claim that the companies are mining illegally in Ghana, arguing that the agreement with the mining companies has not been approved by Parliament as required by law.

Does this mean illegal mining still prevails in Ghana despite gov’t measures to curtail such activities?

He has also asked that a full audit be initiated into the activities of the companies as well as be made to pay back returns from their operations. He is also seeking a lasting order against the companies from engaging in any mining activity in the country. The defendants are expected to respond to the suit within eight days from Monday, December 9.
